Steve Zaat is a Singer/Songwriter from Saint John New Brunswick. The apple didn’t fall far from the tree as Steve's father, Con Zaat, is a well known music educator and entertainer from Charlottetown, PEI. Growing up in such a musical household had a great influence on Steve. Singing in numerous choirs (one choir sang songs in the Dutch language exclusively) Steve took up the guitar as a young teenager and never looked back. Steve started writing songs in the early 90’s and released an eclectic cassette (remember those) called “Joy and Pain” in 1996.

Following the birth of his children and with hours of exposure to the Treehouse TV channel Steve found himself writing some catchy and silly songs for his children. With a recording studio at home Steve recorded early versions of many of the songs that would become Zany Lane hits.
In his professional life Steve was never far from music playing countless shows as a guitarist in numerous bands ranging from Heavy Rock to Blues to Country to Pop. In 2000 Steve moved from his role as a guitar instructor to join the retail team at a busy music instrument retail chain based in Halifax.

In 2005 that path brought him to Saint John, New Brunswick in a management role with the retail chain. Steve prospered in the friendly and talented Saint John environment and soon began work on his CD project “Jumpstart To Eternity” Featuring many of the area’s top players Jumpstart was an ambitious project with eighteen tracks and a spiritually infused vibe. For more info on this and other projects see www.stevezaat.com

While picking up his children at school one day Steve was chatting with fellow Seawood School parent Erica Lane about music and other things. Erica who then operated a pre-school in her home invited Steve to visit “Little Scholars” pre-school to perform for the children. Steve dusted off his old demos of “Monkey Jumpin” and “Raised by Ducks” among others and soon found that the material was finding receptivity with the children and he also couldn’t help noticing Erica’s ability to motivate and lead the children in many of the activities.

Getting tired of the 2am gigs at the local watering hole Steve observed with Erica that there were few options for children’s entertainment in the area and that the time was right for such an act to emerge.
With a special event upcoming at Seawood School in June of 2008 the new duo put together a show for the students but they needed a name. After combining the first two letters of their last names they came up with “Zane”. With a little more work Zany Lane became the moniker. Now with many successful performances under their belts and an upcoming CD Zany Lane is an exciting focus for Steve.
Steve is also in the completion stage of an illustrated book called "That's Me". find out more about it at: www.thatsme.ca

Erica Lane hails from Saint John, New Brunswick. Growing up in the small community of Lorneville her parents always encouraged her in music with vocal and piano lessons being a must (much to Erica's despair !!). It wasn’t until her teen years that Erica began to appreciate her parents investment in musical education and enjoyed singing in several different choirs in Saint John and performing in Saint John High School musicals and dramatic presentations.

Erica has served in youth leadership roles most of her life. After graduating from Mount Allison University in 2004 Erica gained extensive experience as an educator, served as a youth minister, and managed her own preschool. Erica’s ease and comfort with public speaking and her passion for interacting and engaging children make her a natural in the children’s entertainment industry. Children respond well to her enthusiastic, funloving and warm personality.

After spending countless hours attending live children’s shows and performances with her own 2 young sons, Erica saw the need for this type of entertainment in Saint John and realized this would definitely be an adventure she would like to pursue.

Around this same time friend/neighbour, Steve Zaat had been sharing some of his original music with Erica’s preschool students. She was impressed with how receptive the children were to his catchy tunes and lyrics. Thus the plan for providing quality children’s entertainment was hatched. Their first official performance as a duo called Zany Lane was at Seawood School in June 2008. Since this time it has been full steam ahead with many successful performances and a Zany Lane C.D. in the works. Children and adults alike continue to enjoy Zany Lane's fun, educational, interactive, family oriented show.

Erica lives in Saint John, New Brunswick with her husband, 2 boys and 2 dogs.
